For some, the idea of working high above the ground is enough to make their stomachs turn. Yet, those in the scaffolding, construction, and oil & gas industries, the people who build, improve, and shape our infrastructure do so day in and day out, often working at dizzying heights and braving all kinds of weather. Their work is crucial, but it’s also incredibly challenging and exceedingly dangerous, with recent statistics mirroring this.

Falls From Height Fatalities Increasing

The Health and Safety Executive [1](HSE) revealed that 50 workers died due to a fall from height in the U.K. between 2023 and 2024, with these statistics now 35% higher than the previous 5-year average. The statistics are nothing short of devastating, and for many, they may come as a real shock. As the industry strives to evolve, new equipment and innovations are constantly being developed to enhance safety and tackle these alarming numbers head-on.

Fall arrest and fall restraint safety systems, for those who do not know, are the equipment used to provide the correct safety for those who work at heights. One question asked a lot is, “What is the difference between fall restraint and fall arrest?” While both of these systems are very similar, they have distinctive differences.

What is a Fall Restraint?

[2]A fall restraint system is designed to allow workers to perform their tasks safely and correctly without getting too close to an edge or a drop.  Typically, fall restraint systems are used when working at height, where maximum mobility is essential, but not necessarily positioned right on the edge of a drop. This type of system provides the freedom to move while maintaining safety, ensuring that if an accidental slip or misstep occurs, the fall is safely stopped before it can lead to serious injury.

What is a Fall Arrest?

The term "arrest" refers to its critical function, stopping you from hitting the ground or a lower surface in the event of a fall, essentially acting as a life-saving safety measure. The fall arrest contains one or several anchor points that are attached to secure structures, providing the necessary support to prevent a fall. This system gives you a bit more freedom, allowing you to walk up to an edge or drop if necessary work needs to be carried out so close to such an area.

Essential Safety Gear for All Projects

It’s not an argument about which one is better or more effective as both are designed to prevent falls of all kinds.  The reality is that falls are always a risk, and they can happen at any moment. Whether it’s a slip, a trip, or a simple misstep, these incidents are unpredictable. That’s why being prepared for any situation is key.
